Romaine Sawyers deceived supporters on Saturday

West Brom’s game against Swansea City on Saturday wasn’t the most exciting fixture of the Baggies’ season.

The Midlands club drew 0-0 with the Swans, and there really wasn’t all that much to report from what was quite a drab affair.

However, the Baggies supporters were quite happy with what they saw from one man.

Indeed, after the game they took to social media to wax lyrical about Romaine Sawyers after his eagerly-awaited return from suspension.

However, the St Kitts and Nevis international didn’t really show anything that was worthy of such adulation.

Sawyers didn’t have a poor game, but he didn’t influence proceedings half as much as some supporters’ reactions would have you believe.

No key passes, one tackle, no dribbles and no shots on target makes for quite poor reading, and you have to wonder why the Hawthorns faithful were so keen to praise him.

Sawyers have previously been touted as the best passer in the division, but he couldn’t unlock the Swans’ defence at the Liberty Stadium as the Baggies drew a blank.

Perhaps it was the fact that they were so optimistic about his return and they wanted him to do well to the point that any positive impact was magnified in the eyes of supporters.

There will have been a lot of excitement around the fact that one of the Baggies’ most influential midfielders was back in action, and confirmation bias could have caused some fans to have a bit of a skewed view of the 28-year-old’s performance.

Unfortunately, Sawyers wasn’t at his best this week, but his showing seemed to deceive a number of supporters.

Fingers crossed the former Brentford ace can step it up a notch in the coming weeks and rightfully earn the type of adulation he received over the weekend.

In other news, West Brom fans have all been saying the same thing about Grady Diangana.
