Rangers: Arfield let van Bronckhorst down

Rangers failed to capitalise on their rivals at the top of the Premiership drawing as they lost a two-goal lead on Sunday.

The Gers had been held to draws in their last two games against Borussia Dortmund and Dundee United, with this result making it a hat-trick of draws.

Alfredo Morelos and Fashion Sakala scored the goals for the club in the first half, with Jason Roberts and Kaiyne Woolery then equalising it up for Motherwell in the second 45.

Forget McGregor

Allan McGregor will surely be disappointed that he did not keep out the second strike, but another player let Gio van Bronckhorst down badly during the match – Scott Arfield.

The Canadian midfielder was frustrating to watch as he fumbled on the ball in possession and failed to add any value to the team over the course of the 90 minutes.

He did make attempts to run in behind and create space but his lack of quality on the ball meant that they were ultimately useless.

As per SofaScore, he had a 0% dribble success and completed 78% of his passes, whilst only creating one chance and losing possession 15 times in 90 minutes despite playing in an advanced role.

This shows that he lacked the ability on the ball to make things happen for the Gers and that played a part in their failure to secure the win late on.

Whilst they should not have been in a position where they were chasing the game after being 2-0 up at the break, his lack of cutting edge let Rangers and van Bronckhorst down in the final third. He fumbled with his first touch on multiple occasions when trying to receive the ball and that offered Motherwell players a chance to make a tackle on him.

Off the ball, he added very little either. Via SofaScore, the £16k-per-week dud lost four of his seven individual duels and only made one tackle and one interception in the game. This means that he did not offer enough in or out of possession throughout the match and that is why he was a liability on the pitch.

Therefore, he let van Bronckhorst down badly and the Dutch head coach may be starting to wonder whether he is still worthy of a place in the starting XI. Arfield has one goal and zero assists in his last eight matches playing in a forward position for the Gers and this result could be the final nail in the coffin for his spot in the side.
