Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to pile the praise on Joe Gomez, after the centre-back’s excellent performance in the 1-0 win over Wolves at Anfield on Sunday.
The former Charlton defender was heavily lauded by these Liverpool fans on Twitter for his showing in a 2-0 win over Watford recently, and the supporters on Twitter have continued to show their adoration for Gomez after the victory over Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
Gomez had 106 touches of the ball against the Midlands-based side – only Trent Alexander-Arnold had more with 114 to his name – while his defensive efforts helped Jurgen Klopp’s side record a sixth clean sheet in their last seven games across all competitions, excluding the 5-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Aston Villa.
The 22-year-old completed 90.4% of his 94 passes – he made more passes than any other player – while Gomez also recorded two tackles, two interceptions, two clearances and a block as Wolves struggled to find a way through.
The Liverpool No.12 also won two freekicks for his team, and it does feel like Joel Matip or Dejan Lovren will struggle to make their way back into the starting XI if Gomez keeps up this kind of form.
Despite getting their clean sheet statistic slightly wrong – our aforementioned point of six clean sheets in seven is the correct number – this supporter was drooling over Gomez following the full-time whistle against Wolves, saying that the defender was one of Liverpool’s best players again and “did everything right”.
This fan replied to that tweet with their own bunch of superlatives aimed towards the Englishman, saying that Gomez’s “recovery speed is sensational” while his distribution, composure and reading of the game fell under the same adjective.
Elsewhere, the adoration for Liverpool’s young defensive star continued.
One fan named Charlie said that Gomez was even mopping up after Virgil van Dijk at times, while another went as far as saying that the south London-born centre-back was “the reason we won today”.
Lastly, these two fans felt that Gomez was the best performer of the back four against Wolves.
The first supporter of the pair said that he “carried the defence” before going on to criticise Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson’s performances.
