Somerset welcome back their big guns for semi against Warwickshire

da doce: England duo Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Caddick will return for Somerset tomorrow in their C&G semi-final against Warwickshire at Taunton

CricInfo10-Aug-2001England duo Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Caddick will return for Somerset tomorrow in their C&G semi-final against Warwickshire at Taunton. The centrally-contracted pair were not allowed by the ECB to take part in the CricInfo Championship game against Leicestershire so will return with all guns blazing against the Midlanders.Somerset are seeking to reach their second final in the competition in three years and are likely to field the side which disposed of Kent in the quarter-finals.That means Caddick, Trescothick and Keith Parsons replacing Matthew Bulbeck, Matthew Wood and Mark Lathwell.Warwickshire will be without their long-term injury victims Ashley Giles, Melvyn Betts and Dominic Ostler. But Trevor Penney, who now only plays one-day cricket, Mohammad Sheikh and Charlie Dagnall are likely to come into the side in place of Alan Richardson, Ian Bell and David Hemp or Mark Wagh, who all played in the Championship game against Hampshire.Coach Bob Woolmer said of Penney, who now captains the second XI: “He is almost the first bloke you pencil into your team when it comes to one-day cricket.”He is the sort of bloke that a coach cries out for, who is able to take agame through to its conclusion like against Yorkshire in the last round.”Woolmer acknowledges that his Warwickshire side will have their work cut out against Somerset with their big-name players. He said: “Somerset will have Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Caddick back. They are excellent players, but in a way it is not about that. In the end 11 people make the difference.”He believes Warwickshire have a winning blend of youth and experience attheir disposal now.”There is a mixture of people who have tasted success and people coming upwho want success. We have got a good combination,” said Woolmer.”It will probably be asking too much to think we could win everything withthis side. But the cricketers in this side are such that there is a seriousfeeling among them that we can win something this year.”Somerset are desperate to return to Lord’s to make amends for their last final appearance two years ago when, by their own admission, they failed to perform in losing to West Country rivals Gloucestershire.Trescothick said: “We certainly didn’t play as well as we could inthat final and we are hoping we can get through on Saturday and have theopportunity to put that right.”I don’t think we froze. It was just one of those days. Everything went wellfor Gloucestershire and went wrong for us. You have days like that.”There is that West Country rivalry, not so much between the teams butbetween the fans. It is like Bristol City versus Bristol Rovers, a very similarsort of feeling.”It will be nice to give our supporters something to shout about if we goback to Lord’s. If we go back again it won’t all be new to us like it was lasttime and we hope we can put right the devils of 1999.”First we have to concentrate on the semi-final and Warwickshire seem to havea pretty good method and it works well for them, but they are a few playersshort at the moment.”Giles, Ostler and Betts are three major players and, having just played in abig series with England, to lose three major players from your team makes a bigdifference and creates holes you sometimes can’t fill.”And in the meantime Trescothick is happy with both his own and his county’s form.He said: “The boys are in a good little patch of form at the moment. Everyoneseems to be contributing.”As long as they keep playing well, and keep playing well without myself andAndy, then it creates a lot more happiness in the side.”I’ve got five hundreds for Somerset this summer and I feel that I’m justcoming back into form.”I’ve gone through patches of form throughout the whole summer and I’m justcoming back into form after two or three weeks of not scoring many runs.”In the last Test match I played pretty well, and there was nothing I coulddo about the freak dismissal in the second innings, and I’m hoping I’ll be ontop form again on Saturday.”
